Packers XLV

There's Plenty of Blame to Go Around.

Posted November 23rd, 2020 @ 02:11pm

It's so easy to blame MVS for the Pack's overtime loss in Indy. In fact, a few sorry excuses for human beings went so far as to issue death threats to the Pack's wide receiver on social media following the game.

We love this game and we love our team, but those despicable people should be rooted out and publicly shamed for their act of cowardice and social terrorizing. Besides, there were so many other reasons the Packers turned a 28-14 halftime lead into an overtime loss.

We should start with the coaching, on all three levels. Matt LaFleur failed to counter the second half adjustments made by the Colts. His play call on the late fourth and one play was a complete head scratcher, as was time management at the end of regulation. Mike Pettine's stubborn refusal to get out of his dime package in the third quarter allowed the Colts to run the ball down his unit's throats and caused the defense to be on the field for basically the entire third quarter. Shawn Menninga's special team's units were a disaster for a second straight week. Turns out Tyler Ervin appears to be one of the most valuable players on the team and JK Scott may as well start perusing the classified ads (Darrius Shepherd may want to join him).

MVS's fumble was simply the final big mistake made by the Packers on day they went toe to toe with a playoff contender and its big boy defense. By halftime, the Pack had put up 28 points and 200 yards and its two turnovers had resulted in zero points by the Colts. Then came the painful third quarter, where the defense softened and the offense curled into a fetal position.

Despite how the game script got flipped in the second half, the game was there for the taking, as the Pack was moving downfield late with a chance to tie or take the lead. It's gotten to the point that when the Packers face short yardage situations, like third or fourth and one, we hold our breaths and wait for disaster to happen. For as sharp a play caller as MLF is, he is awful on short yardage calls, and his decision on fourth and one was just the latest example.

Then came the weirdest series I've seen in a long time, after the Pack turned the ball over on downs. Penalty after penalty on the Colts. With an eye on preserving time, the Pack declined a penalty that would have put Indy a first and 30 situation, instead deciding that the defense would hold and not allow a first down conversion. Whoops. Philip Rivers and his offense did convert the first down, but thanks to an endless stream of holding penalties, they were forced to punt and give Rodgers one last chance.

Third and ten from the six yard line and it looked like the Pack was cooked, but there was MVS flying down the middle of the field and hauling in a 47 yard reception that breathed life into the offense. The following sequence was not what we're accustomed to seeing in the final minute of a game. Rodgers spiked the ball twice and the Pack seemed to be content to settle for a field goal and go to overtime, rather than go for the kill and end the game. The had the Colts on their heels and their own defense was gassed, yet they never took a shot in the end zone.

It was a maddening second half and a quick, deflating overtime, eliminating the chance to basically wrap up the NFC North before Thanksgiving and stay positioned atop the NFC. All is not lost: over the last six games, the Pack will face just one team with a winning record (the Titans) and they can get the bad taste out of their mouths by kicking around the Bears next Sunday night at Lambeau.

But this game showed us once again, that the Pack is missing that little something that championship teams have: the ability to put mistakes behind them and make the big plays against good teams when it's needed most. Yes, their QB is great and will always give his team a chance. It's time for his coaches to rise to his level, or we'll be in for another big disappointment come January.

Well, they keep us humble right? I have not been a big MVS fan, but he is actually growing on me. I still don't want the Packer to give him the ball near the line of scrimmage, but we wouldn't have been close with his down field play. Hey, he is no Troy Williamson, right? Otherwise, I concur with coaching issues stated. Rodgers missed Tonyan wide open in the back of the end zone. The forth down call was weird. Some of those 3rd and one calls were week. The defense was horrible on third down. Still , I too have optimism for this team. If they find a little rhythm, the offense has all the play makers it needs to score. Even the defense shows up sometimes. ( It has to be said watching Rivers complete a pass is maddening. It like bumble bee flight. How is it possible?) Well, time to play the Bears.

Some writers are complaining about the Defense again saying “ it’s up to the Offense from now on.” In the last number of years , when has it NOT been up to Rodgers and the Offense?

Wow!! First 5 Badger turnovers Saturday and 4 Packer turnovers Sunday....both teams cant win on those fields and both games are making OSSG very OSSG. But to Packer observations: MVS is who he is....but do you really trust him? Fuller...6 catches 80 yards for Houston Sunday and can return kicks. But Gutey loves to keep those draft choices. Speaking of the draft....here is Gutey's 2020 draft in order..Love,Dillon, Deguara,Martin,Runyan,Hanson,Stepaniak,Scott, and Garvin. Maybe some will contribute in future but this year a complete washout disaster. We could have taken Patrick Queen one and a decent receiver 2. But..Gutey's the guru. Outside of getting maybe 3-4 games out of Kirksey do we even have another LB? Seems like Pettine likes having 7 DB's on the field, 4 of which are undrafted free agents who cant guard or tackle. Questionable play calling when we have several 1 yard to go situations. Punting and special teams are terrible. We need Irvin back. Too bad Rodgers missed a wide open Tonyan in end zone to win game. Okay...last comment for you Voice...We are 7-3...but lets be real...without Rodgers we are sub .500 and our conference would look like the NFC East. This team goes by Rodgers magic and when you face good teams in the playoffs we dont have the D to contain. Rodgers would have to carry us. GO PACK GO !!

Well at least I got the vikings game right? I kind of seen that coming. When you score 31 points against that d, you need to win the ball game. I know the turnovers hurt, They always do. But as THC said, the 2 in the first half did not hurt us. Shepard needs to be gone. There has to be somebody out there better then him. He has had to many chances. I am like all of you. On 3rd and 1, or 4th and 1, Why do we never run? Or the one where 12 faked it, he could have taken 2 more steps and got it. Instead he throws it to Williams , who was not sure what to do. Block or run. YOU draft a 240 # rb in 2nd rd, and he can't pick up 1 yd. it's time to quit then. Then as you all say. Change the d up once in a while. Play dime then play nickel if you cant stop the run. It is very frustrating, but was close game as I expected. But thought our d would play better then that. For Roger, Did you notice, that face mask call on 33 that was not called? Why do you only seem to see our supposedly bad calls? But the refs did not lose this game either way, it was coaching and turnovers. But as the commissioner, why are the Packers the only team that has Played 3 teams coming off there bye week, TB, Vikings, Bears and the colts had 10 days? Please explain. It has been fun year, as I say each week. Lets just be happy we have something to watch in these times were in right now. It still just a game we love. Go Packers. P..S. THC please don't get get so cock sure again against the bears. Every time you do that, we seem to lose, It will be tougher then you think. As of now, I'm thinking 20 to 16 or so Packers. . we will see.

That loss is on lefluer and Gutey,on mvs fumble, that play was going nowhere, fourth and one was a disaster, use the middle of the field or a sweep, like Larry says draft Dillion and get one yard on a sweep,I hope Kevin Kings days are done also, enough with the street free agents Gutey,at some point your going to have to draft some stud linebackers and receivers, don’t follow Ted Thompson please, and for Roger Goodell how can the refs screw the Vikings all the time,I know,so can whine!! There terrible

Well, I'd rather see a loss like that, then to have no football at all due to covid. So as disappointing as it was, at least it was entertaining. The 3rd quarter was maddening with the 2 straight 3 and outs. Hope they find a way to bounce back, they usually do after a loss. Plus nice to see us getting healthy after all those injuries in Sept and oct.

NFCN is going nowhere fast. The rebuild in Green Bay started with the draft.

This team is clinging to a shitrope. For those who don't know what that is, it is a rope covered in shit that desperate people cling too and you see the shit acts as a grease and the harder you try to climb up and the tighter you try hold on the faster you slide down the rope and eventually fall straight into the shitabyss. This defense is pathetic as usual, a shitleopard can't change its spots and again here we sit with this organization wasting the HOF QB play of Rodgers. The winds of shit are in the air and a shiticane is coming.

Is anyone going to comment on 9 holding calls in one game. And the two phantom ones that took away 14 points from Jacksonville. I think I've got it. You may have one of the great defensive fronts in all of history. The only way to stop them is to hold. Have you ever seen anything like this? NO, YOU HAVE NOT!

A win was within the Packers' reach but exceeded their grasp. Just like about half a dozen Super Bowls over the last 20 years. The loss doesn't hurt the Packers that much strategically, if we accept the premise that home field in January for this team is not really an advantage. But as a "measurement game" it exposes a lot that does disturb. We could be celebrating a 35-31 Packer victory in regulation if Kirksey's fumble return for td had been upheld. I've looked at that play and the same thing in the loss to Minny a few weeks ago when a similar play on Aaron Rodgers was ruled a fumble instead of an incomplete pass. If the latter was a fumble so should the former have been. A catch, a fumble, pass interference: does any one know or recognize when they occur anymore?

Larry, Every time I think we are go to win with any kind of flare, we end up losing. The Bears are not a balanced team, because they don't have a descent QB. They have a good defense , a good receiver, and will probably have a good/ok running back playing. Even though we will be outside, we should be able to beat this team. If we have 30 mph winds again, then forget it. I would like to see Gary get some more of Preston Smith's snaps. At the same point they keep asking Smith to run with Tight Ends, which he can't do. They have given him an extremely difficult assignment this year, much different then what we saw last year, an he has not handled it well. Anyway, Lazard should factor more in the Bear's game , as well as the Tight ends. The offense is good when the play calling doesn't go wonky. The defense is OK when it plays with a lead, but it needs to improve on 3rd down and get a little more creative. I'm going 28 -17 Packers.

on November 24th, 2020 at 07:07pm

Hey fake Roger, as Davey will tell you.......you can call holding on every single play. Bakthari does those on every single play. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. You always mention a play that wasn't called. I talk about plays that are called. You get them every single week. Don't you ever get tired of it. 9 holding calls, LMAO. Count them, 9.

on November 24th, 2020 at 08:44pm

Our defense sucks donkey balls!!! It's putrid! When we face a balanced, competent offense in the playoffs...We are hosed!!!!!!! BRACE FOR IMPACT!

on November 24th, 2020 at 10:31am

Larry, PackLifer,LDF, Voice....I'm going to bring it up again....Did you see Fuller's numbers on Turkey Day.....6 catches, 171 yds., 2 TD. But Gutey loves his draft choices...would not give a 3 for him. Wow...would he have been something with Rodgers!! GO PACK GO !!

on November 26th, 2020 at 03:23pm

Hey look Roger Goodell (Greg Mudduck) can count!! I thought there was no way he could, must have finally picked it up his senior year 😂

OSSG, I told my wife, OSSG is going to write this when I saw him have that great game. I have him and Watson in Fantasy Football , so I know how good he is. BUT, You cannot give up a 2nd rd pick, for a guy for 8 games. We could have not resigned him. They will have to cut linsly or Aaron jones and a lot more with the new salary cap. This isn't fantasy football. There is a cap to worry about. As I said 10 times, this year. they blew it in the draft, That is when we should have got Mims, Van Jefferson, or Claypool, all in 2nd rd.. Gibson, rb from wash. How did he look? I said to take him in 5th or 6th rd, but I think he went in the 3rd rd.to Wash. 3 picks after Packer picked in 2nd rd. We still could have had him instead of our 245 pound guy that doesn't play. Funny, You didn't mention J.J. watt. Did you watch him? He is the guy I would have given up a 2nd rd pick for and a 4th. He only has 2 or 3 years left and still would have done it. That is who we need. Not another wr. He would change that whole mindset on defense. Just my opinion. I respect yours. Good to have the back and forth, that is what these sites are for I think. Keep in mind who they Played also. Going to be cold and windy again Sunday night,. still saying 20 to 16 Packers if they win the turnover battle or very easily could lose. . GO Packers.

on November 27th, 2020 at 11:10am

I would have taken those hateful fans who made those death threats, tie them to a nuclear warhead, and BLOW THEM ALL SKY HIGH TO KINGDOM COME!!!
