Pack Gets A Win, But It's Not So Special.

Posted December 24th, 2018 @ 02:12pm

So I only got to watch the first half of the Packer game. I had to shuttle daughter Aly to the Maple Grove dome for some indoor softball. I listened to Wayne's call of the second half in my car and was forced to follow overtime via the gamecast on my phone.  So I can't really report firsthand on what went down from my perspective.

What I do know is the bright spots were Aaron Rodger's performance, particularly in the fourth quarter and overtime. Jamaal Williams playing his finest game as a Packer. Davante Adams continuing to do Davante Adams things. The revolving door of defensive personnel, down eight opening day starters in the second half, stepped up and got big stops when it was needed late.

But were it not for a completely undisciplined Jets defense, which was responsible for most of the 172 penalty yards the team incurred, the Packers would not have escaped MetLife with their first road win of the season.

Once again, what stood out most was abysmal special teams play, something we've gotten accustomed to witnessing over the past few years. Giving up long returns, fumbles, penalties: the good news is that special teams coach Ron Zook is about to run out of lives and will no doubt be ushered out soon after the Lions game ends next weekend. It won't be soon enough. Sure, part of the cause is the constant churning of different guys on each unit week in and week out, but this has been a problem for so long that Zook finally needs to go.

Some of you won't be happy that the Pack won because it will cause them to drop down the draft board. A win over the Lions will likely have them picking somewhere in the middle of the first round next spring. I take the other side. I think winning a game like this, riding Rodgers' arm and legs and making a statement can set a tone for the offseason and for 2019. With two #1 picks, Brian Gutekunst can move up the board if he sees a guy that he can't pass up.

There's plenty of work to be done to get back into the NFC conversation in 2019 and it begins with identifying the new head coach. Everything else will fall into place after that, including deciding which veteran free agents to keep, which ones to let go and which ones to target in March.

But for one meaningless Sunday in December, the Pack fought through adversity, overcame double digit deficits several times and leaned on their MVP to get them a win. It was awfully nice to see--even if some of us didn't get to see it.

Whatever a game counts for or not, it's always preferrable to see a Packers' win. A win, finally, on the road avoids a major historical embarrassment for this year's team. But hardly covers for the overall disappointment. Lombardi said that football is a game of inches and the champion is the one who makes those inches. The Packers have been close all year but couldn't or didn't reach those inches. They've lost only 2 games all season by more than a single score. And in those they were still in it deep into the fourth quarter. They lost 3 more by a combined 8 pts. or 2.6 ppg! It's not hard to find 3 or 4 of those 8 losses that could and should have been wins. If they had those inches Sunday's victory would have been much more meaningful. That's something every member of the organization needs to ponder during the offseason ahead. They say it's always best to make your last game a win and only two ways to do that: Win the Super Bowl or close the regular season and go home. Sadly, the 2019 Packers will be doing it the second way.

Great entertaining game. lost 3 or 4 more guys. #12 played well, missed a few passes but that's the guy we remember right? I just listened back to Packer preview. OSSG, are you kidding me?? You go on the radio and say what I have been saying on here for 3 weeks about Fitzgerald as coach and don't say a word that you saw it on on here? Thanks for stealing my take and not saying a word where you saw it 1st. Probably wont be him anyway but was really surprised when I heard it . Maybe you don't read the post on here, and missed it., If that's true, I apologize. Go Packers

It's simple Greg, don't go on this site, you act like the Vikings never got a call in there favor,go on the Vikings site and brag about your team because we're not interested in comments about a team that's never won a thing,or don't they have a blog, same as no super bowl wins!!

I mention Todd Fowles calling out the packer refs, and it instantly goes to the Buffalo Bills. Coaches don't say what Fowles did unless it's obvious. Dam you, Cheating Ref!

Open letter to Larry: Larry...when I was on Packer Preview endorsing Pat Fitzgerald as the next Packer coach it was not because this was someone I had not heard of before your take. I never for one moment even remembered your endorsement on here. I am also a huge Badger fan and have followed coach Fitz for years. Heck..I even remember him as a LB for the 10-1 Northwestern Wildcats that went to the Rose Bowl. My take and research were my own as all my takes on Packer Preview are. and I are some of the true Packer backers on this site which especially this year with the Pack being down is being flooded with SNL wan a be's. Keep up your good posts. GO PACK GO !!

thanks OSSG, it just surprised me, since I wrote my post right after you made your post on McDaniel's 3 weeks ago. I know you heard of him, I just threw out a guy I liked and thru out a flier on him and Zac Taylor as O.C, qb's coach from the Rams. right after I put it down, 2 days later it was on cbs sports website. I also said it 2 more times after. they will probably get some retread like everyone else does. we will see.
