Thoughts on Gutey and Pettine...

Posted January 19th, 2018 @ 05:01pm

Sorry, gang, I should have posted my thoughts on the Pack's big moves a week or so ago. Been traveling for my day job and just haven't had the chance until now.

Let's start with the promotion of Brian Gutekunst. This one caught me by surprise, since insiders were certain Russ Ball had the job, while Packer nation was rooting for Eliot Wolf to get the job it seemed he was being groomed to take over. Reading the tea leaves, it looks like Mike McCarthy won a power play and convinced Mark Murphy to promote a scout to the big chair, over an expert capologist.

I have no idea how close a call it was for Murphy to go with Gutey over Wolf, maybe the nine extra years on the planet was the difference. But I'm all aboard giving him a chance to run the ship. He built his name from the ground up and has worked for 20 years for this moment. I'm quite sure he'll do all he can in this 5-6 year Rodgers window to add veteran talent, while building a core through the draft.

All the upheaval on the coaching staff comes as a surprise, with the exception of the change at defensive coordinator. It was time for a new voice and a new scheme to come in and Mike Pettine has been handed the reins. I was all aboard the Vic Fangio train and was also intrigued with the idea of Gus Bradley bringing what he learned in Seattle and then implemented in Jacksonville and Los Angeles.

Pettine's name came out of left field, but then you start to think about it a bit. He sucked at the teat of Rex Ryan for years before taking over defenses with the Jets and Bills. He was successful enough to get a head coaching job, albeit in Cleveland and like so many coaches before him, saw his career careen just a bit after the expected failure with the league's longtime punching bag franchise.

So the guy's been chomping at the bit to run a defense again, spending this past year in Seattle as a defensive consultant and biding his time for another opportunity.  We all understand he needs some playmakers to make his scheme work. Most importantly, Gutey needs to identify a pass rusher and cornerback this spring via free agency and the draft to add to a solid core led by Daniels, Clark, Perry, Martinez, Matthews, King, Randall, Clinton-Dix and Burnett or Jones.

His aggressive defenses have made life miserable for quarterbacks in the past and we can only hope he'll turn around the Pack's unit to a degree where we'll actually see a decent percentage of stops on third downs and in the red zone.

Murphy's new organizational structuring is the biggest news to come out of Titletown, as he takes a more active role on the football side of things, allowing Ed Policy to handle the business side. Just how active he is remains to be seen, but he will serve as the teams de facto owner and we may see him around more and hear more from him when conflicts arise.

Big changes were needed after 13 years and now we'll see if Gutey, Pettine and McCarthy are up to the challenge.

As for this weekend's games, I got the Patriots winning a close game and the Vikings squeaking past the Eagles 19-17, with a late Forbath field goal exorcizing those playoff demons once and for all.

Is this a packer board or a Vikings fan bashing board ? I guess in this case Bashing is the highest form of flattery. Packer fans are ridiculous, Pathetic and just embarrassing! I am embarrassed for you.

I agree with all points in this post except for one. No way the Queens beat the Eagles tomorrow. They shouldn't even be in this game. Anybody, even the Browns, could have made that catch and run that stephon did. Queens fans and football fans in general should be ashamed at the way he held the ball out and celebrated with his arms crossed at the end. Run in with the ball secured and act like you've been there. As for the atmosphere at the stadium, my cousin, who is a packer fan got a free ticket to go and is convinced that they were pumping in noise from speakers just like they used to do at the dome. Soon it will be Aaron creating a real miracle, and go pack go will be on everyone's tongue! Oh yeah, and good for Aaron ditching that hideous Munn and getting a real girl!

The Pack sucks. Mike McDimwit is a POS head coach, and the team overall blows goats without Erin Jonas Rodgers getting favored treatment. Enjoy a decade of futility.

One of the impressive things about the organizational reshuffle is how the Packers brought in fresh vision and energy but also maintained a level of continuity and "institutional memory" at the same time. It's "reform and reload" rather than "rebuild." Kudos to Mark Murphy in his biggest assertion of leadership to date. One of the coaching additions that should not be understated is the return of Joe Philbin as offensive coordinator. We all remember how awesome the Packer offense was when he was oc-ing it from 2007-11. And his experience and expertise with the o-line will be another asset. Now that Murphy is getting more directly involved in team functions he can act as club president to get the competition committee to examine that late, cheap hit on Aaron Rodgers for a possible rule change or clarification so that sort of thing isn't done again.

I absolutely LOVE Vikings fans. They never disappoint. There's less than 10 minutes left in this fiasco of a game, it's 38-7 Eagles, and we get to enjoy yet another NFCCG Vikings implosion. This defense was supposed to be so terrific. And next year they have no idea what to do for A QB, since all 3 are unrestricted free agents next year? Vikings dominating for years to come? HAHAHAHA!!!

It’s been a pleasure wanting the Eagles destroy the purple. Sokol!

I can't believe my vikes made a poo in our pants like that. The refs made some good calls early in the game with excellent interference calls to give us our only score but stunk after that, they were obviously Eagles fans. Well, let's face it we shouldn't have been there after last weeks win. I'm just glad we don't have to be the losingist most team in NFL history, whew!

to add to a solid core led by Daniels, Clark, Perry, Martinez, Matthews, King, Randall, Clinton-Dix and Burnett or Jones...........lay off the drugs, Sinykin! I seriously burst out laughing!

What happened to the Stinkqueens yesterday is fairly simple to understand. A .500 team got exposed and whipped. Lady Luck refused to smile on them anymore and without their artificial stadium and funny bounces and breaks rolling their way they just didn't have anything. The template for yesterday's show was already evident in their losses at Pittsburgh and Carolina. Had they played some of those home games on the road instead - Saints, Rams, Ravens- they could well have had 2 or 3 more losses on the record. It wouldn't have taken that much to flip the outcome on their games at Chicago, Washington or Atlanta either. And if they hadn't deliberately taken out Aaron Rodgers they'd have two losses to the Packers. It was a mirage and like all mirages the closer you get to what you think you're seeing the more they go "poof."

Cane...ha,ha,ha...Viking fans...ha,ha,ha...PA...BIG ha,ha,ha. I had so much fun watching this game I even turned on PA in the second half to listen to his tone. Viking fans: take a look in your trophy is still empty. I've got to go now and listen to Twin City Sports Talk is sooooo enjoyable. GO PACK GO !!

All of you pack fans babbling about the upcoming 5 - 6 year window left for Aaron Rodgers are delusional. He is rapidly becoming old and frail and, like Tony Romo will probably retire from the NFL by age 35. ____however, Aaron has Zero personality and will never be a TV analyst.

Packers fans talking trash after their team failed to make the playoffs is most amusing. You crapped the bed, boys. 7-9, poor depth and a third place finish.

on January 22nd, 2018 at 11:10am

The best part of the queens not winning the SB is if not this year then WHEN, they got every break they could have. when Wentz went down in Philly the whole state cheered just like after the BS hit on AR. This was you're best shot in YEARS . Look at the history you have never won the BIG game , but ya keep on running you're mouths like a bunch of little PISSANTS. Go Pack

You can whine, cry and sob like a happy little girl about the Vikings losing the NFCCG, but we're freaking awful. 7-9, third place and dropping like a stone.

on January 23rd, 2018 at 09:35am

This year's 7-9 will be just a blip on the radar screen. The Vikings had all the stars line up perfectly for them and STILL blew it! They won't get another shot like that for decades.

we had a hell of a year rubes. It lasted 1 more game then i figured. I told you on last post we would lose 24-20 to the Saints, but as Paul Allen was all ready in his mind thinking of something to say if we happened to score, he came up with the phrase you all know, to be honest i thought it was pretty cache. my defense played like pigs, and i called a bad game. I have to admit the old Packer back up got me good. for those of you fans and media members who say we were flat, did you watch the game? we scored on our 1st drive and held them on there 1st series. the sidelines were nuts. we got our ASS kicked please just admit it. who knows what will happen next year. hopefully Ted will be healthy , he is my guy. like I have said on each post, we were very lucky this year. 2 guys on IR. most team had 8-15 on theirs. if things go good next year we should go 9-7. sorry.

What an enjoyable week this has been listening to all of the excuses from KFAN to KSTP. The best part is the Queens still don't have a QB. I hope they keep Teddy and let Bradford go. They can keep Kenum too but it will cost them 15 million. The next best thing is watching Spielman draft in the late rounds. We'll see what a genius he is. Barr again showed no class on Sunday. Tackling a guy from behind at the end of the game? He also drove Foles into the ground. Barr is a dirty player. Zimmer looked befuddled. Queens found out what it was like to play with injuries, especially to the O-line and DB's. Not so easy is it. M Zimmer sums it up nicely in his comments.

I hope many caught Mike Florio of statement to Paul Allen on his show Tuesday morning: "If you don't fracture Aaron Rodgers' collarbone you're not playing in the final four."

on January 25th, 2018 at 05:04am

Yes. I also said that the Lions would win the division weeks after Rodgers broke his lady parts, too. That's how smart I am.

on January 28th, 2018 at 10:16am

Well, I was going to give Cane Props for showing up after a Viking loss, But that there is "Kane". So , I have to worry about fake news. I would have been happy for all my Viking friends had they kept that ship a float, but alas it was not meant to be. With all these changes, we will need to see improvement to feel they are justified. I mean if Rodgers didn't get hurt, it could have been a much different year. I would still really really like to see Matthews moved inside, but we me more guys who can rush the passer to do that.
