Who Will Be This Year's Shields or Zombo?

Update: Nick Barnett, via Twitter, says the Packers are moving on without him. The team will try to trade him, otherwise he'll be released. No surprise here: new long-term deals for Bishop and Hawk sealed his fate, along with his ill-timed whining about not being included originally in team picture during Super Bowl week.

The first wave of signings in this new NFL season is the undrafted free agents, where Ted Thompson scored big time last year. Sam Shields and Frank Zombo showed that even teams with Super Bowl aspirations can find room for diamonds in the rough--especially when 15 core players land on IR.

This list will change throughout the day, but for now, here are your newest Packers. Chances are, these are the only free agents the Packers will bring in--at least in the next couple of weeks. If Thompson elects to peruse the list of free agents, he'll wait until the dust settles and then look for bargains to fill some holes.

Shaky Smithson, WR/PR Utah: A marginal wide receiver with the Utes, Shaky led the nation in punt returns with a 19 yard average and was a first team All-American as a punt returner. He also returned kicks. Randall Cobb figures to get the first shot at this job, but Smithson could be valuable insurance if Cobb gets hurt. He'll also get a chance to wow us during preseason games.

Tori Gurley, WR South Carolina: Big at 6'4" with exceptionally long arms, Gurley will be in the mix along with Smithson to take Brett Swain's spot.

Anthony Bratton, S Delaware

Brandon Saine, RB Ohio State

Sampson Genus, C South Florida

Jamari Lattimore, ILB Middle Tennessee St.: His 11.5 sacks last season tied for the school record, held by the Pack's Eric Walden: a guy Lattimore will now be competing against.

Vic So-Oto, DE BYU

Kerry Taylor, WR Arizona St.

Diondre Borel, QB Utah St.: Expected to be shifted to WR

Theo Sherman, OL James Madison

MD Jennings, S Arkansas St.

Ray Dominguez, OL Arkansas

Jon Hoese, FB Minnesota

Eli & Elijah "Peanut" Joseph, DT & ILB Temple: The Pack brings in twin brothers. Eli was a first team All-Mac guy, while brother Peanut was a second teamer at linebacker.

Brandian Ross, CB Youngstown St.
